front button Front: FIND SOLUTIONS

It's a rather select group that would know what both of the acronyms on the back of this shirt mean: You have to be a Perl Libertarian, with more than just a passing knowledge of the two. If you do know them, let me know, because I'd like to know who is in this exclusive club. Maybe I'll put together a mailing list...

I'm really not trying to leave anyone out with this one: Education is a wonderful thing, and I love to share the knowledge I've accumulated: The more people around me that know more about more things, the better off we all are, because the synergistic efforts of the collective group will always be greater than the sum of the individual contributions: Brainstorming works, but only if there are enough functioning brains in the group for tangents to be created, and followed.

Reading is a wonderful tool for brainstorming, because it makes possible for a person not present, even ones who are dead, to contribute their thoughts: The power of the written word must not be underestimated: Once thoughts are translated to words, and stored in a medium where they can be later retrieved by other thinking minds, their potential effect is magnified every time a new reader comes across them, or when an "old friend" rediscovers the same passage after having a new perspective, gained either through personal experience, or other reading.

The world is full of questions, and problems to be solved. Finding questions, and finding problems, is something anyone can do - almost without effort. Finding solutions, however, is usually a more creative process, but it is sometimes nothing more than dumb luck: How many things do we have today that are possible simply because someone stumbled across the solution. It's a lot easier to find solutions, however, if you are looking for them than if you depend on luck to send them your way...

back button Back: TMTOWTDI     BUT     TANSTAAFL

OK, here are the translations:

There's More Than One Way To Do It - which is an expression Perl programmers should know - or at least the ones who have read Programming Perl by Wall, Christiansen and Schwartz (published by O'Reilly & Associates). They call TMTOWTDI (pronounced "tim-toady") "the Perl Slogan" because there are so many situations with Perl where that is precisely true. Many people in the "real" world could greatly benefit by learning to follow that advice.

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch is something the Libertarians will tell you, with good reason. (I would cite a reference here, but it's been so long since I first heard the phrase that I don't remember exactly where it came from.) How often have you heard an expression like "... a free service, paid for by ..." Wait a minute! If it's free, why is it being paid for? Maybe because it's not really free? Who pays for all those "free" things so many people take for granted? When you stop to think about it, the only thing that's free is scenery, because you don't even have to make the effort to pick it up to enjoy it - although you do have to make the effort of looking. Even berries on a bush are not a free lunch - you have to pick them if you want to eat them. If it's lunch (or a Social Security check, or advice from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), or any other benefit), it's not "free" - because someone, somewhere, had to pay for it so you could have it "free."

As always, comments are always welcome. We appreciate your feedback.
